Social Media Ate My Homework!
I am quickly becoming a Social Media junkie. I am on Twitter and LinkedIn and I am obsessed with my Flickr account. When I decided to use this blog as a grand experiment in networking, I joined BlogCatalog and Digg
I use Geni to scan and upload family photos and to receive updates on the lives of distant cousins that I’ve never heard of let alone met (FYI, I apparently have a cousin named Doodlebug!) And I even joined a site where I can exchange books with other readers across the country (if you’re interested, click on my referral link at the bottom of the page ;).
By day, I work for a Social Media Marketing company. So, I am pretty well versed in “web 2.0” and I am learning more every day.
However, there is one place that I have always hesitated to go. One place I, in fact, avoided like the plague. I didn’t want any part of it and rolled my eyes when others would talk of it.
And today… I got a Facebook account. I have been assimilated. I feel dirty.
I’m not sure exactly why it is that I have avoided Facebook for so long. Maybe it’s that I am wary of anyplace where you make 500 “friends” in the first minute. Maybe it’s that I moved 1000 miles away from all those people I am now parading myself in front of and “reconnecting” with. Maybe I am uncomfortable with the idea of virtual friendships superseding actual friendships. Maybe I’m just a crotchety old man and I don’t like change. (You kids get off my lawn!)
In any case, I finally realized that I had to suck it up and recognize that the train’s gonna move whether I’m on it or not and I hate being left behind. So, now I’m on Facebook. Will you please be my friend?
